Working with a Doula

“A Mother’s love is the fuel that enables a normal human to do the impossible…”

Marion C. Garretty

What is a Doula?

The original meaning of doula is women’s servant.  Women have been serving others in childbirth for centuries.  A doula is a professional trained in childbirth who will provide emotional, physical, and educational support throughout the pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

What should I expect?

My doula service includes a complimentary meet and greet, a prenatal visit, support through text and phone calls, 24/7 on call commitment starting at 38 weeks until birth and one postpartum visit.

I would like to have at least one prenatal visit where I can get to know you and your hopes, concerns, and preferences for your labor and birth.

I will be on call during your early labor.   When you reach active labor, I will support you at the hospital, home, or birth center.  I will stay with you until you and your baby are settled comfortably after birth.  During the first few weeks after birth I will offer a postpartum visit where I can give support, practical help and mentoring.

Did you Know?

People are often surprised to hear that you can pay for birth doula care using your Health Savings Account (HSA) or your Flexible Spending Account (FSA). In fact, under the IRS regulations, you can pay for 100% of a doula’s fee out of your HSA or FSA account!

To be legally compliant, you must receive a receipt/invoice from your doula and have your doctor sign a “Letter of Medical Necessity.” You can find this letter of medical necessity here.

Another suggestion to help pay for your Doula expenses is to list this under your birth registry and give your friends and family the opportunity to give towards your birth support.
